What do you think of when you hear the phrase, “full-time ministry?” Maybe you think of a man in a collar or flowing robes, a preacher on TV, or a missionary in the bush of Africa, the frozen tundra of Siberia, or the jungles of the Amazon. Perhaps you think of a campus minister who has helped you get to know Jesus in a personal way.To a degree, these can all be examples of full-time ministry. From here on, when I use the phrase “full-time ministry,” I am mindful that all ministry—in every sphere of life—is a full-time calling. However, for the sake of clarity in this book, when I refer to full-time ministry, I am referring to a man or woman whose primary occupation is gospel ministry & all it entails.Full-time ministry is a job, a vocation & a career, but, as we will see, it is so much more.Your questions will be answered: •Does God want you to go into full-time ministry? (Chapter 2) •What is the real difference between a Christian who works a “secular job” and a full-time minister? (Chapter 3) •Does it please God more if you are a full-time minister? (Chapter 3) •If I go into ministry, where do I begin? (Chapter 5) •What will it cost me to follow Jesus into full-time ministry? (Chapter 7) •How can I be paid for doing Christian ministry? (Chapter 9) You may have more questions than the few listed here, but, together we will get to the bottom of this issue and understand how God wants us to think about all these things. Let us start with the first one: Does God want you to me into full-time ministry?After more than 35 years of asking & fielding this question, I have concluded that all believers in Christ should be ministers, but only those who are called & qualified should go into the ministry as a full-time vocation. 2 Timothy 1:9 says that God saved us and gave us a holy calling. This holy calling is different for all of us. But it can be summed up in one four-letter word: work.The Bible has a lot to say about work. One of the first things it teaches about God is that He, Himself, works. And, like in so many other ways, God calls us to be like Him. He created us to work, too. In fact, in Genesis 2, before God gave Adam a wife, He called him to work in cultivating and tending the garden of Eden.Throughout Scripture, there is a clear sense that God created us with a specific plan in mind, but, in most cases, the Bible talks more about how we should work than what our specific job should be. Work is a part of how God orders everything. He said we are to work six days & rest one, not the other way around (wouldn’t that have been nice?). Work was a part of life before sin entered the world. It is a facet of being like God.FORWARD BY JIM LAFFOON I have had the privilege of being Ron Lewis’ friend and co-laborer for over 3 decades.
